Reinventions: Making standing figures

Here’s our guide to making standing figures by artist Anna Spearman. Learn how to:

  • Make self-standing cut-out figures from cardboard, and a range of tailor made paper outfits.
  • Make a variety of patterned paper “fabric” very easily using crayons and water based paint or coloured water.
  • Make costumes or outfits for their characters.
  • Explore creating backdrops and surrounding objects using cut-outs from magazines or newspapers.

The aim of the workshop is to introduce children to creating cut-out characters, which then has open-ended possibilities for adaptation and storytelling.
