Aoibhneas Domestic Abuse Support

Kids’ Own is partnering with Aoibhneas Domestic Abuse Support to develop a unique creative project aimed at amplifying the voices of children and young people impacted by domestic abuse. This collaboration will produce a published book of original artwork and writing, reflecting their experiences, insights, and hopes. Guided by Kids’ Own’s child-centred approach and Aoibhneas’ extensive expertise in supporting families, this project will combine creative arts practice with community development.

Kids’ Own is partnering with Aoibhneas Domestic Abuse Support to develop a unique creative project aimed at amplifying the voices of children and young people impacted by domestic abuse. This collaboration will produce a published book of original artwork and writing, reflecting the children’s experiences of living in refuge accommodation. Guided by Kids’ Own’s child-centred approach and Aoibhneas’s extensive expertise in supporting families, this project will combine creative arts practice with community development.

 Project Goals

  • To create a safe, supportive space where children and young people can explore and express their experiences through art and writing.
  • To develop a high-quality publication that represents the voices of young people in an authentic and meaningful way.
  • To provide young participants with opportunities for creative collaboration with professional artists and writers.
  • To increase awareness of the experiences of children affected by domestic abuse and their resilience through creative expression.

 Why It Matters

This project builds on the Irish government’s recognition of children as both witnesses and survivors of domestic abuse, as outlined in the 3rd National Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Strategy. It fills a gap by creating a resource made by children, for children—providing an empowering platform for young voices.

The resulting book publication is intended as a support for other children, particularly those who are coming into the Aoibhneas refuge for the first time, to help them feel reassured about what to expect in the space.

I Jumped So High
has now officially launched. We were delighted to celebrate the publication alongside the children, families, and everyone involved in the project at a special event on 15th May in Dublin.

The launch was filled with warmth, pride, laughter, and reflection, marking the culmination of a deeply meaningful creative journey. The publication is now available to purchase through the Kids’ Own website.
