Take Care is a practical and creative toolkit developed with care-experienced young people to support schools in creating more inclusive, understanding environments for students in care.

Take Care was created through a unique collaboration between Kids’ Own, EPIC (Empowering People in Care), and TUSLA’s Education Support Service (TESS). Developed with young people aged 14–18, the book emerges from a series of creative workshops in which participants explored their school experiences through writing and visual art.

Their reflections, challenges, and insights form the heart of this publication, offering an honest and nuanced picture of what school life can be like for students in care. The book provides practical guidance for teachers and school leaders, grounded in lived experience, and encourages more thoughtful, compassionate approaches within education settings.

Supported by funding from TUSLA, TESS, Take Care invites greater collaboration between the education and care sectors and serves as a vital resource for anyone working to build supportive school communities for care-experienced young people.
