A book about construction safety by children from all over Ireland

Recommended age: 6-10

Combining poignant advice and cautionary tales, 89 primary school children across Ireland share their knowledge and experience of the high-risk construction industry, with the aim of spreading awareness amongst families employed in construction.

Description

As part of a national competition, 89 children were invited to participate in workshops led by Kids’ Own Publishing in six Education Centres around Ireland. At these workshops, 89 children explored family perspectives on the life and work of a builder, working around machinery and equipment hazards, the risks for children in entering construction sites, the use of safety clothing and many other construction safety issues.

The result of the children’s efforts and creative energy is this beautiful publication which seeks to hight the power of the child’s voice as an influencer of adult behaviour.

‘When you’re finished with something like a hammer – sometimes people just throw their tools down. You need to be careful in case you hurt someone.’

Adas, participant in North East

‘The children’s views are represented truthfully and thoughtfully and the book is testament to the power of children to influence positive change in out workplaces and society.’

Joanne Harmon, Education Manager, Health and Safety Authority
