Reflections on the ‘Four Seasons in Our Garden’ Project

As we near the  completion of the “Four Seasons in Our Garden; A Yearbook” project, we reflect on a year of community, creativity, and learning in Cranmore Community Gardens, Sligo. This project has brought together artists, scientists, and community leaders to explore and celebrate our natural environment.

The project began on October 25th with our Climate Action initiative in collaboration with Cranmore Community Co-Op. Artists such as Sarah Lundy, Karen Webster, Ruth Le Gear, Naomi Draper, and Brenda Kearney, alongside scientists and biodiversity experts Ruth Quinn, Fiona Britton, Aga Piwowarczyk, and Martina Kilian, joined forces to address climate change and promote biodiversity.

During the winter session, Ruth Le Gear led us in exploring the connections between water and soil health. Activities included ice and ink experiments, setting up a wormery, and documenting reflections in a project workbook. These sessions highlighted the relationship between soil and water and their environmental importance.

In the spring-summer session, led by Brenda Kearney and Naomi Draper, we enjoyed an evening of homemade pizzas and garden tours. The event featured an exhibition in the polytunnel and a corsage-making station, where participants shared gardening tips and celebrated the garden’s beauty.

Project manager Lorna Kavanagh reflects on the final session: “We reminisced about past seasons, discussing what we did and who we worked with. We looked at Kids’ Own books and discussed what our garden book should look like. The session ended with ice cream, a fitting end to a year of creativity and collaboration.”

As we near the conclusion the “Four Seasons in Our Garden” project, we thank the Creative Ireland Climate Action Fund, Cranmore Community Co-Op, and all our partners and participants. We look forward to sharing the book created from this project, showcasing our journey through art, science, and community.

Stay tuned for updates and join us in celebrating the power of creativity and collaboration in shaping a sustainable future. We will be meeting up with the group in autumn to do more on the book and some paper/book making with artist Karen Webster so keep your eyes peeled for that.
