A children’s arts organisation and publishing house.
Ukrainian poet Olha Matso joined associate artist Sharon Kelly, along with associate writers Mary Branley and Jo Holmwood, in leading a two-week art project at the Bundoran Community Centre. This initiative brought together Ukrainian and local children, aiming to inspire artistic expression and cultural exchange. Supported by the Donegal Local Development Company, the project focused on creativity, connection, and community building.
Sharon Kelly described the collaborative process that ignited the children’s imaginations. “We began with introductions and a large collaborative drawing, which the children called ‘The Crazy Drawing,’ on joined white card with bamboo sticks and crayon. Mary was great at leading the children into the flow, to let their imagination and natural pull towards things evolve, and subsequent artworks followed on from this,” she said. These sessions allowed children to blend memories and experiences from their diverse backgrounds into their artwork.
Sharon observed a deep emotional theme in the children’s work: “What seemed to come across was a division of worlds, memories from Ukraine, yearning for people, pets, and familiar landscape, and the getting on with daily life in Bundoran.” This highlights the children’s journey as they adapt to new surroundings while staying connected to their roots.
The project was conducted in collaboration with the Donegal Local Development Company. Special thanks go to Yuliia Melnyk, Community Links Worker, who supported the project throughout. Ukrainian writer Olha Matso’s participation added significant cultural depth to the initiative, enriching the children’s creative experiences.
This project is generously funded by the Benefact Group through the Movement for Good Awards, which aims to make a significant difference in communities by supporting projects in education, community development, heritage, arts and culture, and more.
