Highlights from Cruinniú na nÓg creative workshops

Here are some highlights from our Cruinniú na nÓg creative workshops and online masterclasses facilitated by poets FeliSpeaks, Anthony Anaxagorou, Ella Frears and filmmaker Paul Mahon. All of our creative workshops were made for young people aged 14-18 and provided exciting opportunities to work alongside high-profile artists and writers based in Ireland and the UK, to try something new and test out some of their ideas! We were delighted to engage with the attendees and watch their interactions with the creatives involved.

This series of events was created in partnership with Creative Donegal, Sligo County Library, and Leitrim Libraries for Cruinniú na nÓg which took place on the 12th of June this year. Watch our video below to see highlights from each event!

Participants in the Filmmaking Workshop with Paul Mahon learned about different elements of filmmaking including sound design and motion graphics and spoke to Paul about his work. Paul set the group interesting tasks where they took photos and film to specific prompts. Paul then showed them how he would edit these to create a narrative with a short film. See some of the images they took in the gallery below!

Young people who took part in the creative writing workshop with poet Anthony Anaxagorou had the opportunity to try out creating poems of their own, with specific advice from Anthony on techniques for creating interesting and effective poems. Participants shared their work and got wonderful feedback from Anthony.

Felicia Olusanya (FeliSpeaks) hosted a workshop focused on celebrating your identity, where participants had the opportunity to explore and reflect on the different aspects of their identities, and what they feel most comfortable sharing with others. There was wonderful discussion and time for everyone to do their own writing too.

Poet Ella Frears facilitated a creative workshop on poetry and performance, where participants looked at different kinds of poems, and then had the opportunity to create their own. The group also began looking at how to translate this into video or audio work that could be shared online.

Finally, we finished the day on a high note with a creative writing workshop co-hosted by our Young Writers group! The Donegal and Derry/Londonderry writers led a creative session with other young people. There was time for everyone to write new material and to share their work and receive feedback on it during the workshop.
