Celebrating the European Day of Languages: Kids’ Own Highlights Can’t Lose Cant

On September 26th, as we mark The European Day of Languages, we proudly highlight the significance of language learning and linguistic diversity through our beloved publication, Can’t Lose Cant. This remarkable book, created by Traveller and settled children in County Kildare, showcases the rich heritage of the Traveller language, Cant, through vibrant drawings and illustrations.

Originally published in 2003, this title is unique as a book by children for children on the Cant language, making it an invaluable resource for young Travellers and anyone interested in understanding this beautiful dialect. The book features charts and illustrations of Cant words alongside translations in Irish and English, making it accessible and engaging for readers of all ages.

Due to popular demand, Can’t Lose Cant was reprinted last year, ensuring that this important title continues to reach new generations.

The latest reprint was made possible with the support of West Cork Travellers and Galway Traveller Movement. We extend our heartfelt thanks to these organisations for their collaboration in promoting and preserving the Cant language.

In recognition of the European Day of Languages, we invite everyone to explore Can’t Lose Cant and appreciate the diversity of languages that enrich our lives.

The reprint of this book has been generously funded by the Arts Council of Ireland.
