A children's arts organisation and publishing house.
Over three weeks in August, children aged 8–12 came together at Tubbercurry Library to make a book about their experiences of living in Tubbercurry and the surrounding area.
Satellite Stories was led by artist Anna Spearman and writer Miriam Needham. The project gave the group time to draw, write, talk, experiment and think about their local area, with all of the work feeding into a handmade publication.
At the final session on 29 August, Miriam began with a short breathing and relaxation exercise. She then invited the group to offer their own movements, mostly using their hands. It was a simple start to the morning and lovely to see the children joining in and responding to each other.
The last workshop was about bringing together everything they had made over the previous two weeks. They used an old newsletter font on the laptop, worked out the order of the words and images, and made the final decisions about how everything would fit together. Then came the very practical bit: sticking it all together.
The finished book, Revelations of Tubbercurry: Cacophonous Creations from the E.A.L. Collective, is beautiful. It brings together the children’s drawings, writing and ideas about Tubbercurry and is now on display at Tubbercurry Library.
Miriam reflected on the project “It was so wonderful to work with this group of children in Tubbercurry Library over the course of three Saturdays. Each of them had their own unique style and voice and shared their creativity so generously. It was a real pleasure to listen to their thoughts and ideas and see all the brilliant visual work they brought to life – I’m excited to see where their creativity goes next!”
Anna added “It was a pleasure to work on this project. For starters, I love libraries! And Tubbercurry has a fabulous one, it’s bright and warm and we had a great welcome from the staff. I really enjoyed working alongside Miriam, it was interesting to see her perspective as a writer, and to experience writing in such a relaxed and fun way. Most of all though I was inspired by Adam, Emily and Lexie who wholeheartedly shared their stories and their imaginations in the making of this one of a kind, beautiful book.”
Satellite Stories was developed following feedback from families who took part in recent Kids’ Own workshops in Sligo. Many parents told us they would like more opportunities for their children to take part in creative activities close to home.
We’re grateful to Sligo County Council for supporting the project through the Contributions to the Arts Grant Scheme for Arts Festivals & Events 2026, and to Tubbercurry Library for hosting the workshops.
