Our new Stories Together: Creative Family Literacy through art and play project is now underway, with families coming together for a series of creative, play-based literacy workshops in partnership with Family Resource Centre Sligo.
The project supports parents and young children to explore reading, storytelling, rhymes and creativity together. It is particularly aimed at parents who may feel less confident around literacy, creating a relaxed space to learn through art, play and books, while finding new ways to support children’s early literacy at home.
Writer Mary Branley and artist Ruth Le Gear are leading the sessions, bringing stories, making, books, songs and plenty of play into each workshop.
“Our Adult and family literacy workshops are flowing along , with play leading the way. The focus of our workshops is to support parents with their children’s literacy. So while the children were playing with Lego with Ruth and making up stories as they went, I asked the parents what they needed for them. Some parents want to improve their language skills, and learn new ways of helping their children with reading. That’s a wonderful subject to explore in the coming weeks. Our art activity this week arose from looking at the Kids Own publication Clotty Malotty and all her Friends, with the pictures made from Play Dough. We finished with a new song called “Here comes Sally,” where everyone has to click their fingers and join in the chorus, “boom she bop bop”.
We all learn though having fun.”
The workshops will continue over the coming weeks, with each session using creative activities, books and play as a starting point for learning together.
Stories Together: Creative Family Literacy Through Art and Play is delivered by Kids’ Own in partnership with Family Resource Centre Sligo, with funding from SOLAS Learning Works – Adult Literacy for Life.
