Kids’ Own is delighted to announce a new family literacy project, Stories Together: Creative Family Literacy Through Art and Play, developed in partnership with Family Resource Centre Sligo.
The project will support parents and young children to explore reading, storytelling, rhymes, and creativity together through a series of welcoming, play-based workshops. Designed especially for parents who may feel less confident around literacy, the programme will focus on making reading and storytelling enjoyable, accessible, and part of everyday family life.
Through creative sessions led by Kids’ Own artists and literacy experts, parents and children will take part in storytelling activities, art-making, rhyme play, and book-making together. Families will also receive literacy packs containing books, creative prompts, and resources to continue activities at home.
The project will work with families from a range of backgrounds, including migrant families, parents of early years children, and families experiencing disadvantage or barriers to literacy participation.
A selection of Kids’ Own titles, including Wiggly Woo, Jumping on the Bed, Gift of Kindness, A–Z, Clotty Malotty, and Charlie Barley, will be used throughout the workshops to encourage shared reading and creative exploration. Look at more of our titles in our bookshop
As part of the programme, families will co-create handmade books reflecting their own stories, ideas, and imaginations. The project will culminate in a community celebration and showcase of the handmade books at a local venue.
Stories Together aims to help parents feel more confident supporting their child’s literacy development while also strengthening family connection through creativity, storytelling, and shared experiences. Kids’ Own looks forward to beginning the project with participating families very soon.
