New Book Project with Traveller University Students

Kids’ Own is excited to announce a new book project in partnership with the Whidden Project, facilitated through the Access Office at TUS Athlone. This initiative brings together Traveller university students to co-create a published book, sharing their experiences, insights, and creative work.

The Whidden Project, running across five Higher Education Institutions in Ireland, supports Traveller students in accessing and progressing through university. The name “Whidden,” meaning “chatting” in Traveller Cant, and “Kushti to Rokker,” meaning “it’s good to talk” in Roma, reflects the project’s informal, participant-led approach.

This book will build on those foundations, offering young people the opportunity to tell their stories through art and writing, with the support of professional artists and writers from Kids’ Own.

A Participant-Led Approach

Through a series of creative workshops, participants will explore themes such as:

– Navigating education and overcoming barriers
– The impact of peer-led initiatives like Whidden
– Their personal journeys through higher education

The book will reflect a range of voices and experiences, celebrating the achievements and resilience of Traveller students in university.

Publication & Distribution

Once complete, the book will be professionally designed and published, ensuring the highest quality of production. Copies will be distributed to:

– Schools
– Libraries
– Community organisations

This will ensure that Traveller voices in higher education reach a wide audience and contribute to a broader conversation on inclusion and representation.

Why This Project Matters

This project is about more than publishing a book—it’s about amplifying voices, celebrating diversity, and fostering understanding. By sharing their lived experiences, participants will challenge stereotypes and inspire younger generations.

Kids’ Own is proud to partner with the Whidden Project on this important initiative, made possible through the support of TUS Athlone.

Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this creative journey!
