To mark the 20th anniversary of the Irish Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO), Kids’ Own have partnered with the OCO on an inspiring new project. Together, we are working with a group of children from Sligo to create a book that highlights children’s rights and the work of the Ombudsman.
This project aims to elevate children’s voices by encouraging them to explore and express their understanding of their rights. Through this publication, the children will share their insights on children’s rights, the Ombudsman for Children, and why children’s voices are important, providing a unique platform for their ideas to be celebrated and respected.
The Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) is an independent human rights institution dedicated to promoting and safeguarding the rights and welfare of children and young people under 18 in Ireland. Established under the Ombudsman for Children Act 2002, the OCO investigates complaints made by or on behalf of children about services provided by public organisations, such as schools, local authorities, the Health Service Executive (HSE), and Tusla.
The OCO’s mission extends beyond handling complaints. It leads various initiatives to raise awareness of children’s rights, such as workshops, seminars, and Child Talks—an annual event marking World Children’s Day where young people share their experiences and perspectives.
You can explore children’s rights through the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO) interactive game. Visit https://www.oco.ie/itsyourright/game to learn more and get involved!
Through our collaboration with the OCO, Kids’ Own reaffirms its dedication to empowering children and championing their rights. This project not only celebrates the 20th anniversary of the OCO but also provides a meaningful opportunity for children to engage creatively and make their voices heard.
We look forward to sharing more updates on this exciting project soon and continuing to work alongside the OCO in supporting children across Ireland.
