Kids’ Own and EPIC Team Up for New Book

At Kids’ Own, we believe in amplifying young people’s voices through creative projects—and our latest collaboration with EPIC (Empowering People in Care) is doing just that. We collaborated with care-experienced young people (aged 14–18) to create a book that gives schools and teachers real insights into how they can better support students in care.

Right now, we’re putting the final touches on the booklet, and we can’t wait to share it. Thanks to funding from TUSLA’s Educational Support Service (TESS), this project will help ensure that care-experienced young people are heard, valued, and better supported in the education system.

Who Are EPIC?

EPIC exists for one reason: to stand up for children and young people in care. They’re an independent advocacy organisation dedicated to making sure that care-experienced young people—whether they’re currently in care, have left care, or have been through the system—are listened to and have their rights protected.

EPIC works to ensure that young people’s voices are not just heard but also shape policies and decisions that affect their lives. They also create safe spaces for young people to connect, share experiences, and work on projects that matter to them. Everything they do is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, particularly Article 12, which ensures that every child has the right to be heard and involved in decisions that impact them.

What’s This Project All About?

The book we’re creating with EPIC isn’t just another report—it’s a real, practical resource written by young people for teachers. It’s designed to:

– Help schools and teachers understand what it’s like to be a care-experienced student.
– Show how education can make a real difference in these young people’s lives.
– Give teachers the tools to support care-experienced students more effectively.
– Encourage better collaboration between the education and care sectors.

We’re almost there with the final edits, and soon, we’ll be sharing this resource with educators, schools, and policymakers. Our goal? To make schools more inclusive, supportive places for young people in care, ensuring their voices are heard loud and clear. Stay tuned—we can’t wait to share it with you!
