Introducing Súil Eile – Kids’ Own New Project with ChildVision

Kids’ Own Publishing Partnership is creating Súil Eile, a new child-led tactile publishing project in partnership with ChildVision and supported by Dublin City Council

Súil Eile invites children and young people with visual impairments to explore how they experience and navigate the world through storytelling, creativity and making. The project centres on the idea of journeys – from everyday journeys through familiar places, to imagined journeys shaped by memories, feelings and sensory experiences.

Working with a Kids’ Own artist and associate writer, children will take part in a series of creative workshops where they will explore materials, textures, sounds and storytelling. Through tactile experimentation and playful exploration, participants will develop their own ideas and create unique sensory publications.

Each child will create their own handmade tactile book, combining different textures, materials and forms to tell their story. The books will also include an audio element, with each child recording their own narration to guide readers through their work and create a shared experience of touch and sound.

The project is rooted in Kids’ Own’s child-led approach. Children will be co-authors throughout the process, shaping the themes, stories and creative choices within their books. Their experiences, ideas and perspectives will guide the development of the work.

Workshops will take place at ChildVision’s campus in Drumcondra, Dublin, in a familiar and supportive environment. ChildVision will support the project as community partner, bringing expertise in visual impairment and inclusive practice, and helping to ensure the creative process is accessible and meaningful for all participants.

The completed tactile books will become part of ChildVision’s tactile library, where they can continue to be enjoyed by children, families and educators beyond the life of the project.

Through Súil Eile, children’s voices and experiences will be brought to life through touch, sound and storytelling, creating new ways for stories to be shared and experienced.

We can’t wait to share the journey with you. Read more about our current projects here: https://kidsown.ie/projects/
