Updates on our 2021 Young Writers Project!

Our Young Writers project is about to kick off again for autumn 2021, with more creative writing sessions with our writers, facilitated by Kids’ Own Associate Writer Mary Branley. We are hoping to have some in-person creative sessions and events over the next couple of months too. Up until February 2020, our Young Writers group had been meeting in person, and had just had a joint meeting of Derry/Londonderry and Letterkenny writers when we had to move online. Our Young Writers group has since grown with lots of new members and we are really looking forward to being able to bring old and new members together in person!
Our writers have also had a busy summer. As part of the project, they had three creative days online with amazing writers and artists. In July, the group worked with London-based poet and visual artist Ella Frears, Sligo-based writer Louise Kennedy, and actor, theatre-maker and writer, Bob Kelly, who is also Sligo-based. Ella shared her experiences of working as a poet in residence on various projects and the group responded by developing their own, often fantastical, ideas for residencies. Louise spoke with the group about her writing practice, interests, and publications, and listened to and gave feedback on a writing exercise everyone took part in. Bob Kelly shared insights into his wide-ranging career, and engaged the group in fact-paced and dynamic ways of generating ideas and developing structure for their writing.
When the Young Writers group meets again, they will be drawing on inspiration from these workshops to develop new work. We’re looking forward to seeing what happens!
