Right by us: New project with young people

We are excited to have started a new project ‘Right by us’ with a group of young people in the Northside Community Centre in Sligo. This project looks at EU Strategy on the Rights of the Child which was launched recently.

Over two Saturdays in January, Associate Artist Sarah Lundy and Associate Writer Mary Branley worked with the young people to help them identify strands of this Strategy that are most relevant to them.

European Child Guarantee drawing from participant

In the first workshop, participants were introduced to the six areas of the European Child Guarantee and worked together to prioritise them within the context of their own unique lived experiences. The order they chose was the following:

– All children to be safe from violence
– All children to be included in education and health measures
– Child friendly justice
– Global support for children in crisis and conflict
– Safety on the net
– Participation in political and democratic life

Using oil and chalk pastels, the participants explored their feelings about the European Child Guarantee voicing their opinions and ideas on it, in a creative, open manner.

We will be sharing more of their wonderful work on a dedicated space on our website in the coming weeks. We are developing a short video from the project which will be shared online and we will be collaborating with the Children’s Rights Alliance later this year to share and explore some of the findings from the project.

This project is kindly funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs Communicating Europe Initiative.
