Kids’ Own marked World Children’s Day 2024 with a vibrant and inclusive celebration at The Nest in Sligo. The free creative workshop brought together families, children, and members of the Kids’ Own Youth Advisory Group (YAG) for an afternoon of hands-on artistic activities, creativity, and fun.
The day was thoughtfully planned with the input of the Youth Advisory Group, focusing on their three favourite activities: sculpture-making with Jenga blocks, tape, and glue; crafting pirate treasure maps; and creating eight-page fold books (or fewer pages for younger participants). Reflecting on the event, writer Mary Branley shared:
“YAG’s Children’s Day took place in The Nest on November 23rd. This day was planned with the Youth Advisory Group around their three favourite activities with Andy Parsons (artist) and Mary Branley (writer). The children highly recommended making sculptures with Jenga blocks, tape, and glue, creating treasure maps, and making eight-page fold books, or with fewer pages if that suits better. Our Youth Advisory children were on hand to show new children how to get started. Many of the children took part in two different activities, and some got round to doing all three. The time seemed to fly by until it was time for snacks, pizza, and drinks.”
Writer Sarah O’Keeffe added:
“Our 2024 World Children’s Day celebration began on a high note. Members of the Kids’ Own Youth Advisory Group were joined by both returning and new children for a variety of engaging activities and workshops. Participants made eight-page fold books, explored painting, stamped designs, crafted pirate treasure maps, and created sculptures, resulting in a vibrant mix of colours and exciting new characters! The afternoon was filled with new friendships, yummy snacks, and fun. Most importantly, everyone shared a deep appreciation for celebrating the creativity of young people.”
The event celebrated the importance of World Children’s Day by nurturing creativity, building connections, and fostering inclusivity. Thank you to all the families who joined us and made the celebration truly special!
