An Island Away (i.m. Orla Kenny)

In October 2019, a group of Kids’ Own associate artists and members of the Kids’ Own team gathered on the small island of Inishcoo, off the coast of Donegal. Over three days, artists and writers who had worked closely with Orla Kenny, former Creative Director of Kids’ Own, came together to reflect on and celebrate Orla’s influence on their practice and lives.

This time together also provided a vital opportunity for members of the Kids’ Own community to reconnect, and to spend time together, considering and reflecting on Kids’ Own’s way of working. The group explored various elements that are central to Kids’ Own’s work, including what constitutes meaningful engagement, what is most important when collaborating with children, and the value of having confidence in the creative process.

The group returned from the island with a renewed sense of connection and vision for the future.

This artist residential was part of Kids’ Own’s Visibility and Dissemination plan in 2019, funded by the Arts Council. We look forward to offering a variety of events and opportunities to support and connect artists in 2020. Here are some selected images from An Island Away below.
