Up the Hill, Down the Hill: A New Children’s Book

Up the Hill, Down the Hill” – a vibrant new publication created by children living in Respond communities in Waterford – was launched last week, marking the culmination of a joyful collaboration between Kids’ Own and Respond Housing.

Developed through a series of artist-led workshops facilitated by Kids’ Own, the book brings together original writing and artwork created by children as they explored the themes of home, community, friendship, and everyday life. Through storytelling, drawing and discussion, the children shared what matters to them — and their voices take centre stage on every page.

Children from Respond estates, Early Learning and School Age Care Services, and Family Support Services all contributed to the project. The finished book is a celebration of their creativity, ideas and lived experiences.

The launch event, hosted by Respond Family Support Services, was a warm and intimate gathering. Families came together to celebrate the children’s achievements, and each child received a copy of their very own published book. Members of the Kids’ Own team attended and were delighted to witness the children’s excitement and pride. Seeing their work in print sparked joy and a sense of accomplishment — a reminder of the real impact of creative publishing.

Niamh Randall, spokesperson for Respond, said:

“We are delighted to see the book come to life. The book represents all the children in their own special way, providing an outlet for them to share their stories and what they deem as important in their lives.

Thanks to Kids’ Own for collaborating so closely with the children of Respond to bring this vision to life, and to The Arts Council for Young People, Children and Education Project Award for providing the funding for this project.”

Lorna Kavanagh, Project Manager for Kids’ Own, commented

“We were delighted at Kids’ Own to collaborate with Respond Housing on Up the Hill Down the Hill — a project that truly places children’s voices at its heart. The children’s creativity and their thoughtful reflections on home and community shine through every page, offering a moving and authentic insight into their lived experiences.”

This project was made possible with funding from the Arts Council’s Young People, Children, and Education (YPCE) Project Award.

The publication was developed by Kids’ Own Associate Artist Maree Hensey, and writers Mary Branley and Jo Holmwood, in close collaboration with the children and families involved.
