St Joseph’s School Exhibition At The Model

Students from St Joseph’s School proudly showcased their artwork in a special exhibition, marking the conclusion of a 12-week artist residency led by Kids’ Own associate artist Andy Parsons. The residency, designed to support children at St Joseph’s, offered students the chance to explore abstract, process-based art in a way that was meaningful and inspiring.

The event brought together students, their parents, guardians, and teachers and members of the Kids’ Own and Children’s Disability Network Team Sligo, Leitrim and South Donegal to celebrate the incredible sculptures and banners created during the programme. Each student spent time admiring their own piece, beaming with pride at what they had achieved. Project Manager Lorna Kavanagh took a moment to share each artwork and the young artist who created it, with applause and smiles filling the room.

Reflecting on the project, Andy Parsons said, “In terms of the project overall, I wanted to concentrate on materials and processes and use an open, abstract approach. We spent a number of weeks working on large colourful sculptures and also created a set of giant printed canvas banners. The students had freedom to use the materials however they pleased, and I was delighted with the complex abstract forms they created.”

Andy also described the exhibition setup: “For the exhibition in the Model’s Edcation Room, the banners provided a beautiful backdrop for the sculptures to be displayed on low plinths, filling the room with movement, vibrant colour and texture.”

Images of the students’ artwork will soon be on display at the Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT) at Nazareth House in Sligo.

This project, developed in partnership with the Children’s Disability Network Team, highlights the importance of creating space for children to express themselves through art. The work on display celebrated the individuality and creativity of each student, offering a powerful reminder of the value of art in fostering new modes of expression.
