A book project and national ocean and coastal safety initiative led by the Health & Safety Authority, and delivered by Kids’ Own in partnership with the HSA, Kilkenny Education Centre and the Association of Teachers’ Education Centres in Ireland (ATECI).
Children from primary schools throughout Ireland took part in an ‘On the Ocean’ competition organised by the HSA, submitting artwork, short stories and poems on a safety theme. The 84 winning students and 32 children from six fishing towns and villages across Ireland collaborated with Kids’ Own artists Sharon Kelly and Orla Kenny to create a book about ocean safety and fishing life. The children had the opportunity to work outdoors, creating observational drawings and sketches, and together they developed the page layouts for the final publication.
Too Cold for Sharks was officially launched by Minister for Business and Employment, Gerald Nash T.D. and Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney T.D. on 2 December 2014 at Croke Park.
In 2015, Kids’ Own will be working with children in three fishing communities on a follow up project exploring key messages and stories that arose from the book.
