A children’s arts organisation and publishing house.
Kids’ Own is excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at our recent Who Do You Think You Are? workshop held during Culture Night Sligo. Guided by our associate artist Ruth Le Gear, our young artists had a fantastic time exploring their identities through art.
The workshop kicked off with children drawing the person next to them, then letting their imaginations soar as they illustrated themselves in unique ways. Some became enchanting winged creatures, while others transformed into playful tractors—each drawing reflecting their individual creativity.
Ruth reflected on the afternoon “What a beautiful dreamy workshop, the kids were so engaged in their self portraits. The whole atmosphere allowed everyone to sprawl out on the floor and take up their space.. we used pencils and crayons to draw each other at first and remember that there are no mistakes only beautiful ooops..then we used charcoal and crayons to draw real and imaginary versions of ourselves..from robins to tractors to kids who wrote poems..everyone then started to work with collage and create other images of themselves..we listened to Cosmo sheldrakes bird sounds and sounds of space on the yoto player and even though we were in a black box on a sunny day everyone emerged with smiles on their faces.”
We captured the whole experience in photos, showcasing the joy and inspiration that filled the room. You can take a peek at the artwork and see the kids in action below.
A big thank you to Culture Night Sligo for their generous funding, which made this workshop possible. We hope you enjoy celebrating the power of self-expression through art!
