Remote Access

Using web cams and an online journal, Cork-based artist Julie Forrester collaborated with young adults in Northern Ireland. This project explores the use of current online publishing tools by young adults with physical disabilities as partners and co-collaborators.

Project Dates: 2005 - 2006

Remote refers to the experience of isolation or distance either geographically or culturally. Access refers to giving cultural opportunities to those who are under-represented and marginalized in mainstream society.

In one sense, this is a professional development opportunity where the young adults can gain skills by participating on this project. We are giving participants training in web publishing, including new techniques such as podcasting (periodic online audio publishing); photoblogging and moblogging (periodic image publishing); as well as the skills of online collaboration with peers in the group.

In another sense this is a creative and expressive opportunity for the participants. We take a very open-approach to the content of the project, which leaves a lot of room for input and direction to come from the participants.
Heather James will be developing the online environment with participants. Artist, Julie Forrester, will be mentoring the participants in creative skills and approaches, helping them realize their ideas.
