A great launch for a great initiative!

The Kids’ Own Travelling Library was launched yesterday at the Sligo Library. We were joined by children from Scoil Ursula, Donal Tinney, Sligo County Librarian, Eileen Burgess, Donegal County Librarian, Trisha Ward from Libraries NI. We also were joined by librarians from Donegal, Derry, Enniskillen and Sligo for the big event.

Kids’ Own Launches the Travelling Library

The Kids’ Own Travelling Library is a mobile resource that will be housed in libraries, schools, festivals and other settings where it can be easily accessed by children. It is the first library in Ireland that houses books made exclusively by children and aims to build on this genre by providing children with access to books made by their peers and to engage them in book-making activity within the library.

St. Patrick’s Festival Dublin

We wanted to enable children to think and talk about their extraordinary and ordinary world and create a whole book with this story. Kids’ Own and writer Mary Branley in association with St. Patricks Festival Dublin provided a space for children to use their imagination to write and create their very own origami books.

Kids’ Own are working with The Butler Gallery and children of the Butler Gallery Solas programme, to create a new publication that makes us think and understand art more. Part of the process of making the book has led us to consider our own thoughts about art. To help us do that we are talking with a number of the exhibiting artists and two of the artists in the Butler Gallery Collection.
