Kids’ Own Book Press at The Dock

The Kids’ Own Book Press at The Dock kicked off in September: a 10-week whirlwind of sketching, plotting, character developing, writing, typing, editing, printing and finally … stitching and binding!

The Book Press is part of The Dock’s Art Studio, an afterschool programme running parallel to the school term over 10 consecutive Tuesdays. The children taking part are creating their very own limited edition book guided by writer Mary Branley, artist Vanya Lambrecht Ward and a bookbinder. The project will end with a special showcase in December.

With 7 out of 10 workshops complete, it’s very encouraging to see how dedicated, confident and relaxed our group has become. On the writing side, the children are going through several drafts, from the initial ideas, to handwritten beginnings, and now typing. Everyone is well underway in editing their stories, developing their characters and letting plot lines unfold. The reality of the finished work is also looming as decisions about text and image working together are being discussed. The stories are wonderfully varied and full of life, with all kinds and shapes of animals and people running round the Dock on Tuesday afternoons. I can’t wait to see all the work coming together, but I don’t want it to end either.‘ – Writer Mary Branley
